Participant Funding Program decision – Cameco Fuel Manufacturing's licence renewal application

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced on March 7, 2022, that it was offering a total of $75,000 under its Participant Funding Program (PFP) to assist members of the public, Indigenous Nations and communities, and stakeholders in participating in the Commission hearing for the Cameco Fuel Manufacturing (CFM) licence renewal application.

Background

The CNSC made PFP support available:

  • for the provision of new, distinctive and valuable information to the Commission through informed and topic-specific interventions
  • to assist interested parties in reviewing the licence renewal application and in participating in the Commission’s public hearing process

A funding review committee (FRC), independent of the CNSC, was established to review the funding applications received by the CNSC’s PFP administrator and to make recommendations on allocating up to $75,000 to eligible applicants.

The FRC members were:

  • Steve Burgess, retired director with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency
  • James Taylor, retired senior advisor with Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada

On May 27, 2022, the FRC met to review the 5 PFP applications received, requesting a total of $63,814.99.
