Wastes and Decommissioning

Shona began her career at the CNSC as a co-op student in 2011, and then joined the Wastes and Decommissioning Division in 2013.

As a senior project officer and designated inspector, she conducts general as well as focused (waste management) inspections of licensee facilities and sites to verify compliance with regulatory requirements.

Expertise and education

Shona holds a bachelor of engineering (honours) in nuclear engineering with highest distinction from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

Roles and responsibilities

Shona conducts technical assessments of licensee waste management programs, decommissioning plans and financial guarantees to verify compliance with regulatory requirements. She also plays a key role in the modernization of the CNSC’s waste management regulatory framework, which includes developing and updating regulatory documents and industry standards.

As Canada’s national point of contact for the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management, Shona ensures that Canada continues to meet its international obligations with respect to the Joint Convention, including representing Canada at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s international peer meetings.

Shona also mentors inspectors-in-training through the Inspector Training and Qualification Program to ensure that the CNSC continues to have qualified inspectors at the ready so that it can fulfill its mandate.
