Ask an Expert : Fukushima-related health question 6 - HTML5 Transcript/Captions

Yes, it is safe to eat food from Japan. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (or CFIA) regulates the safety of Canada's food supply, based on guidelines set by Health Canada. Japan also has strict limits for radioactivity. CFIA tested more than 200 food samples imported from Japan and all were found to be below the limits for radioactivity. For example, in 2012, the Japanese government tested 10 million bags of rice from Fukushima, and only 71 bags were found to be over the limit and therefore not exported. This is an incredibly small percentage. CFIA also monitored fish and seafood following the Fukushima accident. Radiation levels were below action limits and pose no health concern.
