The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has amended the operating licence for Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.'s (AECL) Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) to extend the licence expiry to May 31, 2003. The operating licence was scheduled to expire on October 31, 2002. The licence amendment was approved by a Designated Officer, in accordance with subsection 37(2) of the Nuclear Safety and Control Act.
The licence amendment was approved to allow AECL and CNSC staff more time, prior to appearing before the Commission on the matter, to resolve issues which will provide more complete assurance that AECL is qualified to carry on licensed activities.
In the opinion of CNSC staff, AECL is operating CRL safely and is expected to continue to do so for the duration of the current licence period. CNSC staff have concluded that doses to workers and to the public, and releases to the off-site environment, are well below regulatory limits.
