Document History of REGDOC-2.5.2, Design of Reactor Facilities: Nuclear Power Plants
Regulatory document REGDOC-2.5.2, Design of Reactor Facilities: Nuclear Power Plants sets out the CNSC's requirements and guidance for the design of new water-cooled nuclear power plants (NPPs).
REGDOC-2.5.2 was drafted following the identification of the need to update existing regulatory document RD-337, Design of New Nuclear Power Plants, which the CNSC published in 2008. The amendments to RD-337 ensure alignment with current national and international codes and practices, most notably the principles set forth in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) document SSR-2/1, Safety of Nuclear Power Plants: Design, and the adaptation of these principles to Canadian practices.
The revised requirements and new guidance also take into account findings from a benchmarking study, which compared RD-337 against the design requirements of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Finland and the Western European Regulators Association to identify differences in objective, scope and level of detail.
In addition, REGDOC-2.5.2 implements recommendations from the CNSC's Fukushima Task Force Report. That report identified improvements to the CNSC's regulatory framework to strengthen the oversight of existing programs, including those for the design of new NPPs.
This regulatory document is intended for CNSC staff to use when reviewing applications to construct new NPPs in Canada. It is also intended to provide requirements and guidance to all applicants and licensees involved in preparing applications for a licence to construct an NPP. Finally, it assists reactor vendors in the development of new reactor designs.
REGDOC-2.5.2 consolidates the requirements and guidance related to the design of NPPs set out in draft RD-337 version 2, Design of Nuclear Power Plants, and draft GD-337, Guidance for the Design of New Nuclear Power Plants, which were released for public consultation in 2012.
This document is part of the physical design series of the CNSC's regulatory framework. Other documents in this series include: RD-367, Design of Small Reactor Facilities (June 2011), and GD-52, Design Guide for Nuclear Substance Laboratories and Nuclear Medicine Rooms (May 2010).
REGDOC-2.5.2 supersedes RD-337, Design of New Nuclear Power Plants (2008).
