Class IB facilities include high-power particle accelerators, facilities that process, reprocess or separate uranium, thorium or plutonium and facilities that manufacture a product from uranium, thorium or plutonium.

2021

Canadian Light Source

Date of the event: April 7, 2021

Canadian Light Source (CLS) has informed the CNSC of multiple confirmed positive COVID-19 cases among employees at its facility. CLS, affected employees and close contacts are following the instructions and safety protocols of the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

CLS’s operations are currently in warm standby mode until at least April 19, 2021. This means that only essential staff are allowed on site, and while the facility will be shut down, critical monitoring and security will continue.

There is no impact on nuclear safety.

2020

TRIUMF

Date: October 6, 2020

On October 6, 2020, TRIUMF informed the CNSC of an accidental release of carbon-11 to the environment through the nuclear stack during isotope production. This release falls far below the action limit and regulatory limits.

There are no effects on the health and safety of the public, workers or the environment because of this event.

As outlined in its licence conditions handbook, TRIUMF will perform a root cause analysis and provide a final report (with corrective actions) to the CNSC within 30 working days.

TRIUMF

Date: October 2, 2020

On October 2, 2020, TRIUMF informed the CNSC that an unintentional release of krypton occurred while irradiating a rubidium target. Further irradiations (the process by which an object is exposed to radiation) have been suspended for the time being.

This release falls far below the action limit and regulatory limits. There are no effects on the health and safety of workers, the public or on the environment from this event.

TRIUMF will submit a final report on this event to the CNSC within 30 working days.

TRIUMF

Date: August 20, 2020

On August 20, 2020, TRIUMF informed the CNSC of a low level gas leak of Xe-123 (xenon and isotope 123) during scheduled monitoring of the stack.

It is estimated that 1 to 2 GBq of Xe-123 was released. This falls far below the action limit and regulatory limits. There are no effects on the health and safety of the public or on the environment as a result of this event.

CNSC staff continue to monitor the response, and TRIUMF will submit a report on this event.
